What is Paint Protection Film?

Paint protection film is a thermoplastic urethane sheet laid over your factory paint — not a coating and not a wax, but a physical layer with real depth to it. That depth is the whole point. When a stone comes off a truck on I-99, the urethane deforms and spreads the impact sideways, instead of your clear coat taking a chip that never goes away.

The top coat is where self-healing comes from: it returns to its original shape as it warms, so the fine swirls that come from washing disappear in the sun or under warm water. Deeper strikes stay absorbed in the film. And it's built to stay optically clear rather than yellow with age.

How much you cover is a question of how you drive. A full front takes the hood, fenders and bumper complete, plus the headlights and mirrors — the surfaces that catch nearly all highway debris. A track package extends that to the A-pillars, roof edge, rockers and rear quarters, the panels your own wheels throw stones at. Full body wraps every painted exterior panel. All of it removes cleanly years later, leaving the factory paint as it went on.

Why choose us for Paint Protection Film (PPF).

Every install is done in-house by our trained, certified team in a climate-controlled State College bay.

How PPF Installation Works at Brakeout Auto

Every paint protection film install follows the same careful process, done entirely by hand in our climate-controlled State College bay.

  1. 01

    Decontamination & Prep

We hand wash, clay and decontaminate every panel, then correct existing swirls so the film bonds to a flawless surface.

  2. 02

    Precision Pattern & Cut

Each piece is cut from vehicle-specific templates, and hand-trimmed where needed, for a precise wrap-around fit with no exposed edges.

  3. 03

    Hand Installation

Panels are installed and edge-tucked by hand in our dust-free, climate-controlled bay so the film disappears into the paint.

  4. 04

    Cure & Inspection

The film cures over the following days, then we complete a final quality inspection before you pick up.

Aftercare is simple: wait about a week before your first wash, then wash as normal. Premium film self-heals light scratches with heat, and every install is backed by up to a 10 year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking and lifting.

PPF vs. Ceramic Coating: What's the Difference?

They solve different problems, and many people combine them. Here's how paint protection film compares to a ceramic coating.

Paint Protection Film

Ceramic Coating

Protects against rock chips, road rash, scratches & impacts
Protects against UV, chemical stains, light swirls & water spots
A thick urethane layer forms a physical barrier
A thin, hard nano-coating, not a physical barrier
Self-healing: light scratches vanish with heat
Does not self-heal
Adds gloss; can be ceramic coated on top
Deep gloss & strong water beading
Lasts up to 10 years
Lasts 1-10+ years depending on package
Best for high-impact areas & full-body protection
Best for easy cleaning & long-term shine

Best of both worlds: many clients apply PPF to high-impact areas, then a ceramic coating over the top for gloss and easy maintenance.

Paint Protection Film (PPF), answered.

Is PPF the same as a clear bra?

Yes. 'Clear bra' is an older nickname for paint protection film, originally for partial front coverage. Today PPF can cover anything from a partial front to the entire vehicle.

How long does PPF last?

Quality self-healing film typically lasts around ten years, and our installs are backed by up to a 10 year warranty against yellowing, cracking and lifting.

Is PPF worth it?

For new, leased or high-value vehicles, and anyone who wants to preserve resale value, yes. PPF prevents the permanent, expensive-to-repaint damage that chips and scratches cause.

How much of my car should I cover?

It depends on how you drive. A partial or full front protects the highest-impact areas (hood, fenders, bumper and mirrors); a track package adds coverage for spirited driving; full-body wraps every painted panel. We'll recommend the right coverage for your vehicle.

Does PPF work with a ceramic coating?

Yes, and the two are often combined. PPF absorbs physical impacts while a ceramic coating adds gloss, water beading and easier cleaning on top. Many clients protect high-impact areas with film, then coat the whole vehicle.

Is PPF visible once installed?

Quality film installed by a certified technician is virtually invisible. Edges are wrapped or hand-tucked where possible so there are no obvious lines, and the film's gloss matches your paint.

How do I care for my car after PPF is installed?

Wait about a week before the first wash to let the film cure, then wash as you normally would, just avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at the edges. The film self-heals light scratches with heat from the sun or warm water.

How long does PPF installation take?

Most installs take one to three days depending on coverage, from a partial front to a full-body wrap. We'll give you an exact timeframe with your quote, and everything is done in our climate-controlled shop.
